I tracked him carefully from the stream, with Splinter higher on the bank as a wolf. We worked as a pair, hunting the leader of the rogue Pack. I would not call him an Alpha. He was not worthy of the title.

Shaz had told me the rogues had gotten the girl, but he had followed the men that had taken her, hitching a ride on the bumper of their van. I didn’t have to worry about her, because I knew where she was. And this asshat wasn’t anywhere close to her, for now.

This bastard was smart, though. He had gone to water, using it to hide his scent as he tried to evade us. He just might too, because I wasn’t sure how much longer tonight I would hunt him. My wolf itched to go after the girl.

We had realized early on that they had masked their scent somehow, so we now tracked them the old-fashion way—with eyes and ears. Splinter pointed out the places where something had dug in the banks of the stream. The first time he had found such a place, he had dug around it and had found nothing. After that, I told him to leave it alone. This now was more about letting this guy know we were the ones in charge. We were the hunters. And he was prey.

We stopped by a large elm, its roots somewhat exposed on the sides of the bank.

He was near here. I knew it. My wolf knew it. I thought about what I wanted to do, since knowing he was here and finding him here were two different things.

Let him go for now or go after him?

I looked down at Splinter, who had joined me near the water.

What do you say? I think he is in that dug out spot over there. My wolf is telling me he is there. We could take him down now, but we don’t know if there is someone higher than him who wanted the girl. Someone who is running this whole thing. We could let him go, and see if he leads us back to her and his handler.

Splinter chuffed. He will go back to her first. She doesn’t deserve what he would do to her. I think we should deal with him now.

I reluctantly agreed.

I turned towards the area where I thought the wolf was hiding. My eyes narrowed as I studied the space.

A black and white wolf fell on top of me from the tree above, landing on my shoulders and pushing me face down into the water. A second one shot over the top of the bank, hitting Splinter as the mud near our feet erupted as the leader, realizing his men were here with him, joined in the attack.

I rolled, holding the wolf that had knocked me down off my throat as he snapped his teeth, his foul breath covering my face. He was muscular and wide, definitely one of the larger lycanthropes. I wasn’t in the best position to fight him, though.
